Go green! Go clean!

Already it is obvious that our earth is facing a crisis with climate change but what can we do as humans? A simple solution would be to reduce our carbon footprint but how? Thankfully, Project Change is here and listed below are some ways we all can reduce our carbon footprint.

1. Stop eating (or eat less) meat

By not eating or eating less meat, it will make a big contribution towards reducing the amount of greenhouse gas being released. Already agribusinesses release more greenhouse gases than fossil fuels. Research has shown that by reducing our meat intake, greenhouse gas emissions can be effectively reduced with red meat being the biggest culprit.

Below you can see the different amount of carbon being released by meat-eaters and vegans with vegans releasing the least amount of carbon due to the fact that they don't eat meat/animal products.

2. Unplug your devices

It's obvious that fossil fuels create energy when being burned, as a result, this releases carbon dioxide into the air, exacerbating the issue of climate change. In saying such, it needs to be known that electronics suck energy EVEN when they're not on. With such, it is important that you unplug all electronics when you're not using them.

3. Drive less

When individuals drive, their car releases carbon dioxide which then contributes towards climate change. By driving less and opting to walk, bike or take public transport, we are reducing the amount of carbon dioxide being released. Already cities are investing in creating infrastructures which make it accessible for the public to move around and not use a car. In saying such by using public transport in the U.S, it helps save 37 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. \

4. Don't buy "fast fashion"

Defined as the practice of selling an endless cycle of clothing trends at a low price, "fast fashion" can play an impact on our carbon footprint. Already heaps and heaps of clothing end up in landfill as fashion trends rapidly change over time. As a result of such, there are 15 million tonnes of textile waste due to "fast fashion." By producing garments with cotton, issues of water contamination, damage to neighbouring non-GMO crops, reduce biodiversity and negative impacts on human health can arise. Already, half of our clothing is made from cotton which is genetically modified by spraying pesticides. As for clothing made overseas, when shipping the garments, carbon dioxide is released and runoff from garment factories can contaminate water from the ocean. With that being said, thankfully, there are ways to stop contributing to "fast fashion." By buying clothes from local markets, thrift stores and op shops like Vinnies, it reduces your carbon footprint.  Another way is through participating in clothes swap events.
