Taking A Closer Look Home...

Home to a variety of different species of marine life, the Great Barrier Reef is in danger. As noted in our previous blog, the ocean plays an important role in our lives and are critical to our health. Expanding on such, the roles of the Great Barrier Reef include:

  1. Protect coastlines from waves and tropical storms.
  2. Provide habitat for marine life.
  3. Provide a source of nitrogen and other essential nutrients for marine life.
  4. Assist in carbon and nitrogen-fixing.
  5. Help with nutrient recycling.
From above, we can see that the Great Barrier Reef plays a significant role in our ecosystem but with our current climate crisis, it's becoming the "Not So Great Barrier Reef" as quoted by Simon.

Taking a closer look home, the Great Barrier Reef's current main threat is climate change and poor water quality. As a result of such threats, if nothing is done within a decade, there will be some corals left but they won't be growing or functioning. Already from the Great Barrier Reef Marin Park Authority, they declared the outlook of the Great Barrier Reef "very poor." This is a step down from it being "poor" in 2014.

With such being said above, it is obvious that more needs to be done in order for the Great Barrier Reef to thrive again. This means looking at the main cause and figuring out solutions to help reduce the impact which in this case is for climate change.

Below are lists of threats faced by the Great Barrier Reef.
